Nutrient availability is a function of soil pH. Conditioning materials move that pH, or correct structure, so applied fertilizer can actually be taken up.
Below the target band, phosphorus locks up and aluminium becomes a problem; above it, micronutrients drop out of availability. Either way the fix is a bulk material chosen for reaction rate as much as chemistry.

Raising pH Carbonate materials neutralise soil acidity. Fineness governs reaction speed — a finer grind reacts sooner and a coarser one keeps working for longer.
Calcium without pH change Calcium sulfate supplies calcium and sulfur while leaving pH largely alone, which is what makes it the tool for sodic soils and structural problems rather than acidity.
Magnesium Magnesium oxide, carbonate and the heptahydrate sulfate differ in solubility and reaction speed — the choice is between an immediate correction and a slow release.
