A soluble cutting fluid has to cool, lubricate and prevent rust simultaneously — as a stable emulsion, in the plant’s own water supply.
Most failures are not lubrication failures. They are emulsion failures: hardness ions break the emulsion, pH falls, and corrosion and microbial problems follow.

Sodium Petroleum Sulfonate The classic emulsifier and rust preventive in soluble oils — it emulsifies the oil phase and leaves a protective film on freshly cut metal.
Emulsion stability A cutting fluid is an emulsion under constant mechanical and thermal stress, diluted with whatever water the plant has. Hard water is what usually breaks it.
Alkaline reserve Pyrophosphate and gluconate hold the pH up and sequester the hardness that would otherwise destabilise the emulsion and let corrosion start on the machine bed.
