What dialysate is made of A solution of pure water, electrolytes and salts. Its job is to pull toxins out of the blood by diffusion across the membrane — so the salt specification is the specification of the therapy.
The calcium question Dialysate calcium concentration is prescribed per patient rather than fixed, which is why manufacturers need a calcium salt whose assay and impurity profile are consistent lot to lot.
Dextrose as the osmotic agent Dialysis solutions have long used glucose, or its hydrated form dextrose, as a crystalloid osmotic agent — readily metabolised and inexpensive.
