A separation is a stationary phase and a mobile phase working against each other — and both are consumables bought on specification.

Ion-pair chemistry exists for the analytes that reversed-phase alone cannot retain: give the ion a counter-ion, and it behaves as though it were neutral enough to hold on the column.

Silica Gel 60-200 mesh The standard stationary phase for column and flash chromatography. Mesh range sets the trade-off directly: finer silica resolves better and runs slower.
Ion-pair reagents Hexanesulphonic acid sodium salt pairs with basic analytes that would otherwise elute in the void volume, giving reversed-phase retention where a plain mobile phase gives none.
Mobile phase purity The ion-pair reagent and the solvent are one system — an impurity in either shows up as baseline noise that the method development then has to work around.
Normal phase and GPC HPLC-grade n-hexane runs normal-phase separations and THF is the GPC solvent — alongside HPLC-grade water, which is a stocked product in its own right rather than something a lab makes.
