Analytical Reagents & Indicators

Thomas Baker AR and LR reagents for classical wet chemistry — titration, Kjeldahl, COD and the stains and indicators around them.

Classical wet chemistry underwrites the instruments: the standards an instrument is calibrated against are prepared with these reagents.

Which is why analytical reagent grade is a documentation standard as much as a purity one — assay, and a certificate that ties this lot to it.

What we supply

Titrimetric reagents (Silver Nitrate solid and 0.1 N, Potassium Iodide, Potassium Thiocyanate, Iodine Resublimed), complexometric reagents (EDTA and its disodium and magnesium disodium salts), gravimetric precipitants (Dimethylglyoxime, Ammonium and Sodium Molybdate), indicators (Bromothymol Blue), and supporting reagents including Copper (II) Sulphate, Ammonium Ferric Sulphate, Ferric Chloride, Zinc Dust and o-Phthalaldehyde.

Argentometric titration Silver nitrate — as solid or as standardised 0.1 N solution — with thiocyanate and ferric indicator is still the reference method for chloride, long after instruments could do it.
Complexometric titration EDTA and its salts remain the standard route to water hardness and metal-ion determination, with the indicator chosen for the metal being titrated.
Gravimetric precipitants Dimethylglyoxime for nickel, molybdate for phosphate — reagents that pull an analyte out as a weighable solid of known composition.
Method reagents Whole methods depend on a single reagent: mercuric sulphate and silver sulphate for COD, mercuric acetate and ammonium sulphate for Kjeldahl, copper sulphate for Fehling and Biuret, iodine for iodometry and Gram staining.
